Description

This 20-CD set of Bach recordings marks the 90th birthday of the great Czech harpsichordist Zuzana Růžičková, which falls on January 14th 2017. The recordings were originally made for Erato between 1965 and 1975 in Paris and Prague. - These recordings have been newly and fully re-mastered in 24BIT - 96kHz from the original master-tapes. On hearing the remastered versions, Mahan Esfahani said: “I’ve been listening to Zuzana Růžičková’s recordings all my life, but this remastering was a revelation: her playing has never sounded so lifelike before.”

Masterful performance of Bach's harpsichord music including the sonatas for violin/harpsichord and cello/harpsichord with Suk and Fournier. Having heard many versions of Bach's music on the harpsichord and piano Růžičková stands with the best. She is always totally engaged and fresh in her playing. Perhaps her changing of registers is not approved by some but it charges her performances. Her "Goldberg" is one of the best versions I have ever heard. I have listened to Růžičková's "Well Tempered Clavier" several times with great pleasure. All the music is thought through and burnished by feeling. Růžičková was a child prodigy who survived the Nazi death camps. She has said Bach helped her survive the camps having written down a small section of Bach's English Suite No 5 in E minor on a scrap of paper when she left Terezin in a cattle truck bound for Auschwitz. Afterwards she had to completely retrain her hands. What an extraordinary achievement we hear on these many discs!
